Dr. Carl P. E. Springer (-)


Dr. Springer is Professor of Classics at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Northwestern College and a Master’s in Biblical Languages, as well as his Ph.D. in Classics, from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Springer is best known for his scholarship on the early Christian Latin poet Sedulius, whose collected works he is in the process of editing, and for his studies of Martin Luther's knowledge and use of the classics. He is working on a book on Luther’s edition of Aesop’s fables. Springer has received numerous grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Philosophical Society, the American Council on Education, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and others. He has been a Fulbright Research Fellow in Belgium and also was awarded a fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to conduct research in Germany.
