Rev. Dr. Bjarne W. Teigen (1909-2004)


Bjarne Wollan Teigen was born on July 21, 1909, in Landa, ND, to Martin and Mathilda Teigen. Graduating from Concordia College-St. Paul, MN, in 1935, he was ordained a Lutheran pastor in 1935 at Story City, IA. He married Elna Tjernagel on September 6, 1937. After serving parishes in Story City IA, Fertile, MN, and Chicago, IL, he was called as Registrar to Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN in 1945. He earned B.A and M.A. degrees at the University of Minnesota, Concordia Theological Seminary - Ft. Wayne, IN, awarded him a Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa. He served as president of Bethany Lutheran College from 1950 to 1970. During these years, he also served private and public higher education in Minnesota through membership on a variety of boards, planning commissions, and accrediting committees. Bjarne taught theology and English literature at Bethany College and Seminary into his retirement. Throughout his career he published articles on higher education and Lutheran theology. In retirement, he prepared a series of pamphlets on the Confessions of the Christian Church useful for classroom and parish Bible class use.
