The Rev. Jonathan E. Shaw is Director of Church Relations for the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). Previously he served as a U.S. Army Chaplain (Colonel), retiring from the Pentagon in October 2020 with 39 years of service, concluding his military service as U.S. Army Chaplain Corps Director of Operations (2016-2020). Ordained in 1984, he served LCMS parishes in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Winchester, VA. Academic work includes: BA, Political Science, Wheaton College, IL, 1978; M.Div., Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, IN (CTSFW), 1984; MA, Ethics, Vanderbilt, Nashville, TN, 1999; ILE, Military Doctrine and Operations, in residence at U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, KS, 2003; STM, Systematic Theology/Ethics, CTSFW, 2004; MSS, Strategic Studies, in residence at U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, PA, 2010; DD, Concordia University, Irvine, CA, 2015. He is a founding editor of the journal Gottesdienst (1990). He writes in the areas of systematics, exegesis, liturgics, ethics, the “two kingdoms,” religious liberty, just war, and moral injury. He and his wife Brenda are blessed with three adult children and seven grandchildren.
