Making the Most of Our Congregation Meetings.
Concerning this topic there was a finc discussion at a recent conference,
from which the following points a.re offered for wider consideration.
1. All the men of the congregation who are not physically or mentally
handicapped should, jf possible, be induced to become voters and to take
part in the work of the congregation. The customary age is twenty-one,
when they reach their majority; but young men over the age of eighteen

may well be encouraged to attend as visitors. Women are not to take part
in the deliberations of the ekkksw, but they should be encouraged to ask
questions and to talk over the business of the congregation with their hus-
bands, 1 Cor. 14,35, also to pray for the success of the meetings.
2. The meetings of the congregation should be conducted in an orderly
and efficient manner, 1 Cor. 14, 33. 40. To this end we need well-indoctri-
na ted men (and the voters' meetings should also serve this need), also
such as understand the principles of parliamentary rules.
3. Every congregation needs a good constitution and by-laws, brief and
clear, and available for reference at all times. Important resolutions,
especially such as permanently affect any part of the congregation's work,
should be indexed for the use of the secretary.
4. The order of business should be drawn up by the board of elders
in advance of the regular meeting. It shoulfl be practical, follow the best
parliamentary procedure, and include regular reports of all standing and
special committees as well as the societies which operate under the aus-
pices of the congregation. The followillg items should lJe on every order
or business: Devotional opening; ten minutes for the presentation and
discussion of the work of the Church at large; minutes; reception of new
members; report of treasurer and fim1ncial secretary; report of boards,
standing and special committees; reports of parish-school, Sunday-school,
young people's society, and other organizations; report of delegates to
organizations with which the congregation is affiliated (publicity, char-
ibble societies. educational organizations, etc.); unfinished business; new
business.
5. It is desirable that all members be furnished with a mimeographed
copy of the order of business. This will save time, because it is conducive
to following an orderly proceuure. Roll-call, especially in larger congre-
gations, may well be done by means of cards which are distributed in
time and collected at the close of the meeting. All reports and recom-
mendations should be presented in writing, preferably in triplicate type-
written form (reporter, chairman, secretary).
6. A good chairman is essf'ntial for successful meetings (good judg-
ment, determination, firmness, calmness, friendliness, tact, par liamen-
tarian), also an efficient secretary (careful, conscientious, scrupulously
exact, ability to summarize discussions).
7. Cases of church discipline should not be disposed of in a perfunctory
manner, but in a way that all members realize the purpose of winning
erring brethren. Above all, Matt. IS should actually be observed, not
merely referred to.
S. Among the topics with which the meeting proper can be opened
may be mentioned: The work of Synod, missions at home and abroad,
education in the congregation and elsewhere, stewardship, young people,
marriage, the liturgy and church customs, unionism, lodge, heterodox
denominations, adiaphora, etc. It is essential that these topics be well
prepared and interestingly presented to give the members something in
every meeting that is helpful, to assist them in solving their problems, and
to effect a better attendance at meetings. At the same time members
should be encouraged to put the information to use, to discuss the wel-
fare of the congregation and of the Church at home. P. E. K.

These words are from the well-known and comforting words of Paul,
Rom. 8, 28: "We know that all things work together for good to them that
love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose." It is
a truth which has already comforted countless numbers that, no matter
what may betide, "all things work together for good to them that love God,"
even though it be a cross.
It is interesting at least to find parallels or near-parallels to this
sentiment in extra-Biblical writings. In the, 001-PU8 Hermetioum, a, body
of writings variously dated from ca. 100 B. O. to 300 A. D., ascribed to
Hermes Trismegistus1, in Libellus IX, § 4 b, we find the statement naym
