Vittius Valens and the New Testament. Under this title, Mr. E. K. Simpson of Ipswich, England, in the Evangelioal Quarterly of October, 1930, shows in an interesting manner how even ancient books on astrology cast light on certain disputed words of the New Testament. Valens, who according to the author lived in the second century after Christ, wrote a comparatively unknown Greek astrological treatise bearing the title Vettii Valentis Anthologiarum Libri. Mr. Simpson raises the question, "vVhat affinity worth naming can subsist between the contents of Holy Writ and these vain dotings of a pagan soothsayer?" and thus answers this question in the closing words of his interesting article: "As an interpreter of stellar telegraphy we esteem his work rubbish; but, as Pliny the Elder has observed, 'No book is so bad that some profit cannot be made of it'; and the profit of Valens, as we have sought to show, COll- sists in the cross-lights he reflects on the text of the Greek New Testa- ment." We quote a few passages of special interest: - "The much-debated compound {honysvawr;, 2 Tim. 3, 16, hardly met with elsewhere save in one passage of Plutarch's Morals (904), where it occurs as an epithet of dreams, greets us in an interesting passage of our author (IX, I), in which he echoes Horace's divinae partioula aurae by the assertion: saTl Tl {}StOY BY ~fttY {}sOnYSVaTOY 0TJfttovI!YTJfta, a fairly con- clusive proof that, as Dr. Warfield has elaborately argued, the word bears a passive sense. Val ens also makes use of the word {}SorpOl!sLaf}w (II, 36) like Menander in his Theophorumene, to signalize some form of divine 'inspiration,' or actuation. Cf. 2 Pet. I, 21." (Page 393.) "NVx{}nftEI!OY, 2 Cor. II, 25. This interesting formation was clearly requisitioned to denote a day of twenty-four hours in contrast with the abridged reckoning of 'the third day,' etc., common both to sacred and profane literature. It is found in a fragment of Plutarch (0),0/ YVX{}TJftil!fJ1, Mor., VII, 54; Teubner), descriptive of a voyage, and may pass for a nau- tical term. Astronomers likewise needed such an expression. So Val ens (VIII, 6; IX, 4) has recourse to the equivalent ~ft8I!0YV"TtOY (VII)." (Page 395.) "Much nonsense has been written concerning the sheer inadmissibility of the old translation of Phil. 2,16: 'holding forth the Word of Life,' and 308 Theological Observer. - .!titd)nd).8eitgefd)id)md)e~. all manner of grotesque substitutes for it have been propounded, not- withstanding the clear example of such a sense of briXElV, pointed out in Theoor., XIII, 46. The fact that Paul's figure here is an astronomical one seems to be generally ignored. Yet the noun CPW(J7:fjgsr; in the previous verse intimates luminaries not merely in the LXX and the papyri, but in Valens himself (II, 32); and he repeatedly makes use of the verb E:n:EXEtv (e. g., in LV, 21. 22; V, 11) to express the tidings which particu- lar conjunctions of the stars tender or present to the sons of men. They may 'announce,' for instance, a year of drought. Surely this usage lends support to the traditional rendering. Another term around which con- troversy has gathered, the e:n:L).Vatr; of 2 Pet. 1,2, bids fair to receive its quietus from Valens's unequivocal restriction of it (IV, 11; V, 9, etc.) to the sense of elucidation, interpretation (German, Aufloesung), after the model of its parent verb." (Page 396.) "The Ev:n:sgLaw-r:or; of Heb. 12, 1 is confessedly a hard nut to crack. Half a dozen renderings are conceivable; but we hold that the old version derives countenance from Valens's constant use of the noun :n:EeiaT:aatr; to express the conception of straits, 'embarrassments.' When Epictetus applies the epithet anEgLaw-r:o{; to Diogenes (Arr., IV; 1,159), Liddell and Scott translate the term 'solitary,' a description much more applicable to Timon. We venture to think that our adjective unenoumbered would be nearer the mark; for Diogenes's chief boast was that he was not ham- pered by circumstances. In Hebrews Ev:n:EgLar:ar:or; manifestly carries, as it can do, an active sense." (Page 397.) T. L. Mission Activities of Mohammedans and Hindus. - In one of our exchanges Dr. Dennert is quoted to the: effect that Mohammedanism in India is very much alive and in recent years ha.s increased by nine million adherents. While there are six Christian journals in India, the Mohammedans have ninety. Proceeding from India, the MO'hammedans ha.ve founded more than two thousand mission societies in China. In Africa also the religion of Islam is on the increase. Cairo is its liter'(Lry center in North Africa. It. ha.s 474 daily papers at its disposal. Its Euro- pean center is London, (Lnd it has mosques in a. numbe·r of cities. In Berlin, for instance, there a.re two. The other Asia.tic religions are not nearly as active in their attempts to gain adherents as is that O'f the Mohammedans. But Hinduism is making some efforts to increase its dominion; it has settlements in North America., and in San FranciscO' we find a Hindu temple. Buddhism is carrying on a strong propaganda in Europe. Its center in Ge.rmany is located at Frohnau, near Berlin. The Bible student, while filled with s(Ldness when he sees these (Lntichristi(Ln religions gaining ground, on the other hand is not surprised, for he will think of 2 Thess. 2, 11: "And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion that the.y should believe (L lie."
