No. 35. >> I, too, ran across something in our readings. What are Servant Songs? >>DR. DANIEL L. GARD: The Servant Songs are a section of the second half of Isaiah in which the term servant appears. Briefly, it consists of four different Servant Songs. The first is Chapter 42 Verses 1 through 9. The second is Chapter 49 Verses 1 through 13. The third is Isaiah 50 Verses 4 through 11. And the Fourth Servant Song is Chapter 52 Verse 13 through 53:12. These four focus on the servant. And we'll be spending some time coming up now and discussing some of these Servant Songs. And their beautiful, incredible messianic importance. Some of these are quite familiar to Christians because they are so heavily associated with particular seasons of the church here. For example, Lent and Good Friday. In these texts we find Isaiah speaking not just of the immediate future. In fact, not just speaking of the future for the nation of Israel, either during the time of Babylon or the return from exile under the Persians. But looking forward in time to a time when the true servant of God would come.
